OZKONAK UNDERGROUND CITY
OZKONAK UNDERGROUND CITY

Özkonak Underground City is one of the fascinating historical and natural riches of Cappadocia. This underground city, located in Özkonak town of Avanos district, is an impressive living space that people have built underground throughout history to protect themselves from wars and invasions. Özkonak, which is less known than other famous underground cities such as Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı, is thus quieter and like a treasure waiting to be discovered.
The underground city was carved into volcanic tuff rocks and is equipped with rooms, tunnels and ventilation shafts that extend underground, layer by layer. One of the features of Özkonak Underground City that makes it different from other underground cities is the defense mechanisms developed against enemy attacks. Thanks to the long, thin holes, hot oil could be poured on enemy soldiers or attacks could be repelled. These holes also provided communication and ventilation between rooms.
Özkonak Underground City extends up to ten floors in total, and only four floors have been cleaned and opened to visitors so far. These floors contain rooms with different functions such as living spaces, kitchens, stables, churches and warehouses. Especially large meeting rooms and wine cellars provide clues about the social life of the underground city.
As visitors make their way through the narrow and sometimes low tunnels, they can imagine the daily lives of the people who lived here throughout history. The dark and cool atmosphere offers a unique experience to feel the spirit of the times. Özkonak Underground City can also be explored in more detail with guided tours. Guides provide visitors with a more meaningful travel experience by providing interesting information about the city's history and architecture.
Özkonak Underground City, one of the unique beauties of Cappadocia, is a destination not to be missed for history and adventure lovers. Exploring this unique underground world means collecting unforgettable memories in the mystical and fascinating atmosphere of Cappadocia.
