UNDERGROUND CITIES

The underground cities of Cappadocia are a series of ancient subterranean settlements that were carved out of the soft volcanic rock by the Hittites and later expanded by early Christians to provide refuge during times of war and persecution.

There are several underground cities in Cappadocia, with the most famous ones being Derinkuyu and Kaymakli. Derinkuyu is the deepest of the underground cities, with eight levels extending up to 85 meters (280 feet) deep, while Kaymakli is the largest, with over 100 tunnels and a capacity of up to 3,500 people.

The underground cities were equipped with ventilation shafts, water wells, kitchens, and even wineries, providing a self-sustaining environment for the inhabitants. The tunnels and rooms were connected by narrow passages and stairs, and some of them had rolling stone doors that could be closed to block intruders.

Today, visitors can explore the underground cities and get a glimpse into the lives of the ancient inhabitants. The tunnels and rooms are well-preserved, with some of them featuring displays of ancient artifacts and tools.
