Landscape and geology
Devrent’s soft volcanic tuff has been sculpted by wind and water into pillars, cones, and hoodoos. The rocks often appear in warm pink, beige, and ochre tones, especially vivid at sunrise and sunset. Unlike some other Cappadocian valleys, it was never heavily inhabited, so the focus is entirely on natural forms rather than carved dwellings.
What to See
The valley’s nickname comes from the way its rocks resemble animals and figures when viewed from different angles. Most of the rosy rock cones are topped by flattish, darker stones of harder rock that sheltered the cones from rain until all the surrounding softer rock eroded away — a process geologists call differential erosion. The most iconic shapes include a camel, dolphin, snails, birds, snakes, and even formations said to resemble Napoleon's hat and the Virgin Mary holding Jesus
Practical Info
The valley is located between Avanos and Ürgüp, about 10 kilometers from Göreme, and there's no entrance fee. Early mornings or late afternoons offer the best lighting for photography and more pleasant weather. Walking paths are sandy and slightly uneven, so comfortable shoes are recommended. The valley has no shade, so sun protection is essential in summer.
