History and architectureThe “castle” is a natural volcanic outcrop honeycombed with man-made chambers, tunnels, and stairways. Occupied since at least Roman or early Byzantine times, it formed part of a network of rock-cut fortifications including Ortahisar Castle and Ürgüp.
